Happy Guy Fawkes Day!

In 1605, Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators were arrested and charged with planning to blow up Parliament and kill King James I (the “Gunpowder Plot”).  The plotters had stashed 36 barrels of gunpowder under the House of Lords in furtherance of their plan. Their beef with the king was based on religious differences.

Someone dropped a dime and Guy and his fellow conspirators were arrested on November 5.  They were tortured and executed a few months later.

Ever since then, the English have organized big parties with fireworks and bonfires on November 5.  The festivities include burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes and the consumption of British beer by some. Very fun.
